Wagner Cast Iron Corn Bread Skillet

Have you ever seen one of these very unique cast iron cornbread skillets?

They are a very useful pan that comes in several sizes often found in 6-slice and 8-slice models.

The 6 slice is a little less common than the 8 slices meanwhile they are used to cook a variety of culinary delights including brownies, cakes, and anything else you could dream up.

The secret to using this type of pan is all the way around the piece you get a nice crisp edge unlike brownies in a regular pan that only has that crunchy edge on the pieces that touch the pan.

We have added a few images below to show different manufacturers from the United States. These are all vintage skillets with manufacturing dates CIRCA 1930 to 1960s.

Vintage versus New

Finally, with a quick search on Google you can find NEW skillets like the ones below however, in my opinion, the vintage ones are still the best.

Meanwhile, with a little effort the next time you see an antique take minute to stop to see if they may have one of these gems sitting on a shelf somewhere. Often these can be picked for less than 15.00 depending on the condition.

Sometimes you get lucky and find these vintage skillets. In the meantime, we are always on the lookout for these skillets.

Below is a picture of a restoration project we did on a 6 slice that went into our private collection it is BSR ( Birmingham Stove and Range )

As you see there was a lot of rust on the skillet when we started. However with a little elbow grease look at what she turned into. Finally, in our restoration shop, we are still amazed at the before and after of some of the cast iron cookware, we get the chance to restore….

Conclusion

There are many manufacturers of cast iron cornbread skillets/pans both now and then. We prefer to use vintage cast iron cookware over any of the new production cast iron cookware.

Vintage cast iron is usually lighter,

Has lasted 50-plus years or more ( what new stuff lasts 50+ years now) and last but not least there is no chance of new cast iron having any collectible properties.
