Can Cast Iron Skillets Go In The Oven

Is it possible to use a cast-iron skillet or pan in the oven?

One of the more traditional methods of cooking is to use cast iron cookware.

Cast iron cookware has been around since at least 220AD, and possibly even earlier. Many people around the world continue to appreciate and use this sort of cookware.

A skillet is usually one of the first cast-iron components purchased by individuals who are just beginning to start. A skillet is a skillet that sits on the stovetop and is used for frying dishes, preparing eggs, and making stirfries, among other things.

What about the oven, though?

Is it possible to bake a cast iron skillet or pan?

In the oven, cook a steak in cast iron.
You can, in a nutshell, say yes to this question. You may safely use a cast iron pan in the oven. In reality, seasoning your skillet requires placing it in the oven for the seasoning process to operate.

Because a cast iron pan can be used in the oven, it’s great for finishing steak that has been browned on the stove.

Simply sear your steak on the stovetop first. The pan should then be transferred to the oven to complete cooking using oven mitts. Use oven mitts because you’ll be working with a very hot cooking surface and don’t want to burn yourself.

You may also use the reverse sear procedure to do it the other way around. This means you’ll cook the steak in the oven on low heat after placing it in the skillet. Then, using oven mitts, you remove the skillet and finish searing the steak on high heat on the stovetop.

This gives the top of the steak a lovely caramelized sear while keeping the inside of the steak nicely cooked and juicy. When cooking thick steaks that I want to ensure are cooked in the center but still have that gorgeous sear on the surface, I utilize reverse searing.

The only reason I can think of why you wouldn’t be able to use a cast iron pan in the oven is if it had a non-oven-safe handle. It would, however, be quite unlikely for this to occur.

The beauty of cast iron is that it can be used on a variety of heat sources, including stovetops, ovens, campfires, and grills. So adding non-heatproof additions would be futile.

Is it safe to use cast iron skillets or pans under the broiler or on the grill?

beneath the broiler, cast iron skillet
Cast iron skillets can be used in the oven, as well as under the broiler or on the grill. This makes them great for completing dishes that require oven browning.

Especially the meals with cheese or potatoes on top. It’s incredibly convenient to be able to finish the dish without switching pans under the grill.

Keep in mind that the broiler’s heat can be rather powerful. As a result, it’s a good idea to check with the manufacturer first to see if they have any broiler-specific requirements.

What is the maximum time a cast iron skillet may be kept in the oven?
The beauty of a cast-iron skillet is that it can be baked for a fair amount of time at high heat. Certainly long enough to cook any recipe that requires complete oven cooking.

Cast iron melts at temperatures exceeding 2200 degrees Fahrenheit and doesn’t show metal fatigue until temperatures around 700 degrees Fahrenheit, thus it can endure far more heat than the usual household oven.

If you want to season your cast iron pan, put it in the oven for about an hour.

Most recipes ask for an hour of cooking time, some somewhat longer, some slightly shorter, and that’s great; your skillet will easily withstand an hour or two in the oven.

Is it Safe to Bake Cold Cast Iron?

Cast iron is a tough material, but it isn’t invincible. It can break if dropped, and it can also break if subjected to significant temperature fluctuations. DO NOT immerse a hot skillet in ice water. It’ll break. Allow the skillet to cool completely before washing it.

If you put your skillet in a hot oven after it has been in the refrigerator, it will almost certainly crack. The opposite is also true: switching from oven to refrigerator will cause problems (and it’s not healthy for your refrigerator). You should be alright if you put your cast iron into a hot oven after it has been resting at room temperature.

Alternatively, you can heat the pan on the stovetop for a few minutes before placing it in the oven.

But, even better, if you put the skillet in a cold oven and then turn on the heat, the pan will gradually heat up as the oven heats up. You should never have a problem with cast iron cracking if you do this.

Conclusion

What about a cast-iron skillet with the enameled coating? Is it safe to put it in the oven?
Yes, the answer is yes. Enameled cast iron skillets can certainly be used in the oven; however, you must treat them with a bit more care than you would with conventional cast iron cookware. This is due to the fact that if not used properly, enameled cast iron can crack or chip.
